Throughout the course we met a few times with our COMPanions. I think that we can all agree that when we first met them we were a little thrown off by what to think, I know I was. All in all though it was really helpful having someone there to help us edit our papers.
COMPanions are a group of students selected by Emily to come in and help us become stronger writers. The first time they came was for our first essay, appropriate. We were counted off, a few times, and separated into groups of four. We knew ahead of time that we would be editing so we all had multiple copies of our papers that would soon be marked by scribbles, slashes, and underlines. I thought the essay I had written was one of those shitty first drafts, but as it turns out it wasn't completely beyond repair. Working in groups with my classmates made me a little nervous because I hate reading my work aloud, but I really got some great feedback and ending up turning my first draft into a grade "A" essay. They helped me see where my writing was a bit choppy, or where it didn't flow very well. Most of my grammar mistakes were corrected, and a lot of my repetition was reduced. We all took turns reading our essays and helped each other along the way. I came up with a title for one paper, while someone else helped me bring my paper to a nice conclusion. I was really happy with the way the students volunteered their time to come in and help us. From now on I think I'm going to have friends peer edit my papers more often. It can be really beneficial for you grade and worth it. I hope one day I can become a strong enough writer to return to class as a COMPanion.
